This page shows the documentation of the things I have learnt in term 2.

Laser Cutting

FabLab Keychain
Sketch to become dxf file

What's interesting about this would be that I learned to modify the sketch to prevent the 'islands' within letters 'a' and 'b' from falling out by creating a 'bridge'.

This is what the completed laser cut keychain should look like.

Music Box
First I set parameters for my design as seen below. These user parameters allow me to control the size of the objects within my design. The parameters do so by creating equations and relationships that I can reuse throughout the sketch dimensions and modelling features.

Next, I sketched out the front of my music box as seen in the image on the left. I picked 5 tabs on all sides of my box. After doing so, I extruded the sketch by 2.7mm as seen in the image on the right.

Then, I sketched out one side of my music box as seen in the image on the left. After doing so, I extruded the sketch by 2.7mm once again as seen in the image on the right.

After that, I created midplanes for both the front and side faces of the music box as seen in the image on the left. Then, I mirrored the 'bodies' to create the 4 faces of the box, similar to a 'tube', as seen in the image on the right.

Finally, I created the top and bottom of the music box. Then, I flattened the box and created a new component called 'music box laser file'. After that, I projected the bodies as a sketch onto that component and then exported it as a DXF file.

Here's the embedded design of my music box.
I uploaded the DXF file into Inkscape and created a design to be engraved into the wood by the laser cutter. Here's the image of the final laser cut piece of wood. As you can see, I have optimised the use of the wood material by shifting the individual parts around. I also laser cut into as much scrap material in order to minimise waste.
And finally, the assembly of the music box. As you can see here, the mechanism of the music box sits inside the wooden box.
